Colours are always bearers of meaning in our life and are therefore very important at a psychological level to reinforce and provoke all kinds of emotions. This truth is at the basis of Colour Analysis, the science that studies the harmony between colours, since each different shade is able to change the visual perception of a place or even of a person. Armocromia, or Colour Analysis, is very popular especially among personal stylists, and is also used on a daily basis by interior designers and planners, who are now increasingly attentive not only to the final look but also to the psychological impact; as well as to the fruition of the environments they are going to create. After all, it can truly be stated that certain colours can make a setting larger and more spacious, while others manage to conjure up a more welcoming, reserved space. And the same goes for the energies that are channeled into a physical place: the right choice of colours can make an environment more suitable for concentration or more conducive to brainstorming.

.

What is colour?

The basic premise is that in nature there is no such thing as colour, merely electromagnetic radiations that are perceived by the eyes. These send received information to the brain, which processes it, and duly returns visual colour information. We can say that this comes from brain processing, each colour is intimately linked to the brain itself and its ability to process information, moods and … emotions!

It should therefore not be surprising if colours affect:

  • perception of spaces: the darker a colour is, the more it absorbs light, the more it will tend to make spaces appear small and cramped. By contrast, the lighter a colour is, the more it reflects light, the larger spaces become.
  • mood: in relation to perceptions of the space around us, colours are able to give us a strong symbolic value, which depends on the contingent situation we are experiencing at that precise moment, as well as on what it was in the past, and also on our character.

Each setting has its own colour

There are numerous studies that remind us how each room, depending on its use, should have different colours inside. One shows that green-yellow combinations optimise energy and concentration: at the same time, the direction in which a room faces is also important in defining its style and colour. A north-facing room or office, for example, should contain warm colours that can counteract the coldness of the light – all the more so if no sunlight ever reaches it.
